Pushing the Bounds of Technology in Microelectronics

Draper has been an innovator in microelectronics for decades.

Our strengths include radiation-hardened systems, tailored systems, technology protection, and cybersecurity. Our expertise dates to the application of the first integrated circuits used to create the Apollo guidance computer that brought the first man to the moon, early ballistic missile guidance computers, and the first fly-by-wire flight computer.

As we continue to innovate, we have multiple talented staff working alongside our customers to ensure their microelectronic needs are met.

Meet Colleen Anderson, the Associate Director of Tailored Microelectronic Systems who leads nationally important programs enabled by a highly talented engineering team.

Q | Tell us about your role and how it relates to Draper's national security mission?

A: I am the lead for tailored systems, which provides mission-specific solutions for national security needs with technical focus in microelectronics, cyber, and materials. Within this area, the multifunctional Draper team is chartered with supporting some of the nation’s most challenging problems by

  1. Innovating through creative technical solutions using an iterative and agile approach
  2. Driving leading-edge technology development to meet emerging national security objectives. With a rapidly growing business, I am leading an effort to establish Draper’s microelectronics strategy for facilities and infrastructure. This infrastructure will enable existing and enduring businesses, as well as allow Draper to provide microelectronics services to a much broader customer set. Stay tuned!

Q | What motivates you to want to work at Draper?

A: I absolutely love the team of engineers and program managers that I get to lead and work with on a daily basis. I am consistently in awe of their creativity, drive, dedication, and commitment, not only to the project mission and Draper, but also to each other. It is an environment that is supportive and inspiring, motivating me every day.

Q | What do you enjoy when it comes to the microelectronics area at Draper?

A: Draper is pushing the bounds of technology when it comes to microelectronics and packaging. We are creating first-of-a-kind designs, progressing the new technology through development and prototyping, and in some cases even transitioning these ideas into production. The work is abundant, and the team is always exploring new and novel concepts in an exciting and ever-changing environment.

Q | How do you think you have grown as a leader since stepping into your role?

A: I have learned so much since stepping into this role, from technical to people and everything in between. I have learned that promoting a supportive and collaborative atmosphere will result in a positive and productive environment for technical execution. In order to be successful, it takes a village - the team extends far beyond the individuals in the lab, and it is important to take the time to integrate and include those enabling functions throughout program execution. I also have learned to lean on those around me for support when needed, and of course, always ask questions. Ultimately, my hope is that I am successful in helping to grow and advance those around me by providing valuable and important experiences.
