DRAPER'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM
Draper Laboratory has a long-standing and extensive community outreach program that was formalized in 1984. Aligned to our business interests and educational mission, this program demonstrates a strong investment in the local community's quality of life. Draper supports nonprofit, community, civic, and educational programs in Cambridge that benefit Cambridge residents. Each year, more than $140,000 is distributed through our Community Relations Programs.
COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM
Through our Community Grant Program, Draper provides grants to deserving nonprofit organizations and institutions serving the Cambridge community. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting educational programs in engineering, mathematics, and science, followed by those in human services and arts and culture. Administered by a review committee of volunteer employees, proposals are reviewed three times per Draper Fiscal Year, and more than $100,000 in funds are disbursed each year.
CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS
Draper makes a limited number of sponsorships available to non-profit organizations in Cambridge on a yearly basis in order to support special events and programs that benefit local agencies and the greater Cambridge community. Whenever possible, organizations are encouraged to apply for funding through Draper's Community Grant Program.
EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
Our interest in advancing engineering and science education through our community outreach is a natural extension of Draper's corporate mission. Employees serve on advisory committees for the Rindge School of Technical Arts and the United Way's Math, Science and Technology Initiative. Draper employees conduct a yearly program in conjunction with National Engineers Week and visit schools to help bring engineering into the classroom. Draper's efforts at expanding STEM education are supported by volunteer employees who serve on the Education Outreach Committee, by hosting Cambridge high school students in summer internships and by funding independent science research projects for students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School. Draper is also an annual sponsor and participant in the Cambridge Science Festival.
DRAPER VOLUNTEERS!
The employees of Draper Laboratory have a long history of service to the communities in which they work and live and participate in group and individual volunteer opportunities in both community and civic organizations. The Lab works to help facilitate volunteerism through programs like the Cambridge School Volunteers' Key Pal program and Science Club for Girls. Draper Volunteers! activities are coordinated by employees on the Draper Volunteer Council and have included volunteering at the Greater Boston Food Bank and the Charles River Clean Up.
IN-KIND DONATIONS
Draper donates available surplus equipment and office furniture to nonprofit organizations and institutions. Limited photocopying services also are donated to nonprofit groups. Both kinds of donations are restricted to agencies serving the Cambridge community.
COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS
Draper is a founding member of the Kendall Community Group, a collaboration of businesses and human services agencies designed to support local youth programs. A member of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, Draper serves on the Chamber's Board of Directors and Draper was a founding member of the Chamber's Community Outreach Committee. Draper is also a member of the Cambridge Funders Group and Associated Grant Makers, Inc.
EMPLOYEE GIVING
Draper runs an annual campaign for the United Way of Massachusetts Bay. Employee donations to the Laboratory's 2007 campaign totaled more than $190,000. Employees have also generously participated in company-matched emergency fundraising to help national and international emergency relief efforts.
